The Role of L-Glutathione Reduced in the Immune System

Feb 06, 2023
L-glutathione reduced (GSH/ Glutathione, CAS No.: 70-18-8) accumulates in the liver and acts as an important detoxifier. Various toxins, pollution and carcinogens are removed from our body through pathways promoted by glutathione. Our immune system relies on an appropriate immune response to fight off foreign invaders such as bacteria, viruses and parasites, and glutathione plays an important role in these functions and the proliferation of lymphocytes to fight these organisms.

Glutathione is thought to help cross cell membranes, transport L-alanine, L-threonine for white blood cell production, and it is essential for lymphocytes. The immune system relies on glutathione. Supplementing glutathione can improve the ability of macrophages to destroy bacteria that invade the cell membrane. Macrophages are important cells to protect tissues and organs, and they can promptly remove foreign bacteria. When glutathione is depleted, the production of macrophages is inhibited by the prostaglandin, leukotriene C, so tissues and organs such as spleen, lung and liver will lose the protection of macrophages.

When the immune system is not functioning properly, the body becomes weak and diseases such as high blood pressure, heart and microvascular diseases, arthritis, diabetes, cancer and lung diseases are prone to occur. Immunocompromised individuals have low glutathione levels, and healthy people also have low glutathione levels when they fight disease. The role of lymphocytes in the immune response depends on glutathione for their proper function and replication. Therefore, increasing glutathione in the body can enhance the activity of lymphatic T cells in the immune system to produce antibodies to fight against foreign pathogens. Glutathione can resist the common cold or influenza. It can be seen that increasing the level of glutathione in our body can reduce colds. Most chronic diseases are related to glutathione, such as chronic asthma, inflammatory diseases and chronic fatigue syndrome. Glutathione is the cell's own master antioxidant, and antioxidants play vital roles in maintaining health and preventing disease.

As we age, the levels of glutathione in the body decrease. According to research, a steady decline in glutathione in tissues is a general feature of aging. Therefore, it is necessary for the human body to supplement a certain amount of glutathione to ensure the immune function of the human body.
